Note: | Data on population changes are obtained from statistical reports processing about demographic population events (marriages, divorces, births and deaths) producing statistical survey contents on population. The data cover all inhabitants residing permanently in Slovakia regardless of their citizenship as well as citizens of the SR with permanent residence in the SR during their temporary residence abroad. Demographic statistics includes also the statistics on spontaneous and induced abortions. Migration statistics includes internal migration (permanent address changes be-tween municipalities, or city parts in Bratislava and Košice) and foreign migration, which means a change of the country of residence, irrespective of citizenship. | Data from the Population and Housing Census make up the foundation for balancing of the number and structure of the population by age, marital status, nationality, citizenship and the country of birth in the next ten years term on the basis of demographic statistics data on births, deaths and migration. | In 2012, the processing of birth statistics changed: while until 2011 the number of births included also children born abroad to mothers with permanent residence in the Slovak Republic (SR), since 2012 the birth statistics have included children born in the SR only, and the number of the SR population has included only those foreign-born children who were registered on permanent residence in the SR. | The mid-year population (i.e. the population on 1 July) is produced by using the demographic balancing method. It is the preliminary figure. Relative indicators (crude rates) calculated by using this mid-year population are preliminary figures as well. | Live births (persons) – A live-born child is a child showing at least one of the following signs of life at birth such as breathing, beating of the heart, pulsation of the umbilical cord, active movement of muscles though the umbilical cord has not been cut or the placenta has not been born. At the same time, the birth weight is a) 500 and more grams or b) 499 grams and less if a child survives 24hours after its birth. | A stillborn child (persons) means a child who did not show any signs of life at any time after being born, and his/her birth weight was 1 000 grams and more. | Abortion (number in units) – the number of spontaneous abortions (miscarriages) + the number of induced abortions. | Abortion is premature spontaneous or artificially induced termination of pregnancy including extra-uterine pregnancy where the foetus does not show signs of life and its birth weight is below 1 000 grams, or the foetus shows some sign of life and its birth weight is below 500 grams but it does not survive 24 hours, or if the weight of the foetus cannot be established and duration of gestation is below 28 weeks. Induced abortion is artificially induced termination of pregnancy including ex-tra-uterine pregnancy. Spontaneous abortion (miscarriage) is spontaneous termination of pregnancy, i.e., an abortion due to biological causes, without an obvious external intervention. | Pregnancy termination (number in units) – the number of births + the number of abortions. | Infant mortality (persons) – the number of deaths of children aged up to 1 year. | Neonatal mortality (persons) – the number of deaths of children aged 0-27 days. | Natural increase (persons) – the number of live births - the number of deaths. | Immigrants on permanent residence / Emigrants from permanent residence – persons regardless of citizenship who have changed the municipality (or city part in Bratislava and Košice) of permanent residence within the territory of the Slovak Republic (i.e. internal migration) or who have changed the country of permanent residence (i.e. international migration). | Net migration (persons) – the number of immigrants - the number of emigrants. | Total increase of population (persons) – natural increase + net migration. | Perinatal death (persons) – the number of stillbirths + the number of deaths of children aged up to 7 days. | Crude marriage rate (per mille) – (the number of marriages / mid-year population) * 1000. | Crude divorce rate (per mille) – (the number of divorces / mid-year population) * 1000. | Number of divorces per new marriage (per cent). | Crude birth rate – (the number of births / mid-year population) * 1000. |
