Note: | Data on population changes are obtained from statistical reports processing about demographic population events (marriages, divorces, births and deaths) producing statistical survey contents on population. The data cover all inhabitants residing permanently in Slovakia regardless of their citizenship as well as citizens of the SR with permanent residence in the SR during their temporary residence abroad. Demographic statistics includes also the statistics on spontaneous and induced abortions. Migration statistics includes internal migration (permanent address changes be-tween municipalities, or city parts in Bratislava and Košice) and foreign migration, which means a change of the country of residence, irrespective of citizenship. | Data from the Population and Housing Census make up the foundation for balancing of the number and structure of the population by age, marital status, nationality, citizenship and the country of birth in the next ten years term on the basis of demographic statistics data on births, deaths and migration. | In 2012, the processing of birth statistics changed: while until 2011 the number of births included also children born abroad to mothers with permanent residence in the Slovak Republic (SR), since 2012 the birth statistics have included children born in the SR only, and the number of the SR population has included only those foreign-born children who were registered on permanent residence in the SR. | Since 2011, the mid-year population (average) has been calculated as the arithmetic mean of the initial (1 January) and final (31 December) stocks of the population for the reference year. Until 2010, the mid-year population had been calculated by means of the demographic balancing method as the number of population on 1 July of the reference year. The methodological change resulted from the practice in the European area. | The number of permanently resident population on 1 January of a reference year is, as a rule, identical with the number of population on 31 December of the previous year. Exceptions are the years of the Census of Population and Housing (Census). | The number of permanently resident population on 31 December of a reference year is, as a rule, identical with the number of population on 1 January of the subsequent year. At the same time, the population on 1 January plus total population increase equals the population on 31 December. Exceptions are the years of the Census of Population and Housing (Census 2001, 2011), where the population on 1 January of the Census year is recalculated (re-balanced) on the basis of Census results and demographic data on the population change (i.e. births, deaths and migration) processed for the period from 1 January to the Census date (e.g. 20 May 2011) inclusive. For this reason, the population on 1 January of the Census year is not identical with the population on 31 December of the previous year. | Crude birth rate (per mille) – (the number of live births / mid-year population) * 1000. | Abortion (number in units) – the number of spontaneous abortions (miscarriages) + the number of induced abortions. | Abortion is premature spontaneous or artificially induced termination of pregnancy including extra-uterine pregnancy where the foetus does not show signs of life and its birth weight is below 1 000 grams, or the foetus shows some sign of life and its birth weight is below 500 grams but it does not survive 24 hours, or if the weight of the foetus cannot be established and duration of gestation is below 28 weeks. Induced abortion is artificially induced termination of pregnancy including ex-tra-uterine pregnancy. Spontaneous abortion (miscarriage) is spontaneous termination of pregnancy, i.e., an abortion due to biological causes, without an obvious external intervention. | Crude abortion rate (per mille) – (the number of abortions / mid-year population) * 1000. | Abortion ratio (per cent) – (the number of abortions / the number of births) * 1000. | Pregnancy termination (number in units) – the number of births + the number of abortions. | Pregnancy termination rate (per mille) – (the number of pregnancy terminations / mid-year population) * 1000. | Crude death rate (per mille) – (the number of deaths / mid-year population) * 1000. | Infant mortality (persons) – the number of deaths of children aged up to 1 year. | Infant mortality rate (per mille) – (the number of deaths of children aged up to 1 year / the number of live births) * 1000. | Neonatal mortality (persons) – the number of deaths of children aged 0-27 days. | Neonatal mortality rate (per mille) – (the number of deaths of children aged 0-27 days / the number of live births) * 1000. | Perinatal death (persons) – the number of stillbirths + the number of deaths of children aged up to 7 days. | Perinatal mortality rate (per mille) – ((the number of stillbirths + the number of deaths of children aged up to 7 days) / number of births) * 1000. |
